Kamloops Fruit Tree Pruning Tips

Why Pruning Fruit Tree?

It’s not a secret that fruit trees produce more fruit when they are pruned. The pruning stimulates the tree to produce more fruit. When the tree is pruned, the fruit producing buds are opened. Fruit buds are not always located at the bottom of the tree. It’s important to prune to stimulate the fruit buds to develop into fruit. Prune your fruit tree to get the most fruit.

How to Prune Fruit Trees

The first step in pruning your fruit tree is to remove the suckers and dead wood. Then remove any branches that are crossing over the trunk of the tree. If you are pruning a fruit tree that has a central leader, you will need to remove the central leader. Remove any branches that are crossing over the trunk of the tree. If you are pruning a fruit tree that has a central leader, you will need to remove the central leader.

There are several ways to prune trees.

Maintain healthy branches:  A healthy branch is one that is straight and has a diameter of 3/4 to 1 inch. If you notice any bent or broken branches, remove them immediately. They are unhealthy and will not produce apples. If you notice any branch that has a burr on it, or is cracked or diseased, remove it. This will keep your tree healthy.

Remove dead branches:  If you notice any dead branches on your apple tree, cut them off immediately. These branches are not healthy and will not produce apples. You may notice dead branches that are leaning over the tree. If this is the case, remove the dead branch and cut the branch off at a 45 degree angle. If the branch is too thick, you may need to cut the branch at an angle to remove it.

Remove damaged branches:  If you notice any branches that have been broken or cracked, remove them immediately.

What do I do with my tree after I prune it?

When you are finished pruning, you should remove any tools from the tree. Make sure you clean up any tool marks on the trunk. This is a good time to give the tree a good soaking. Use a hose or garden sprayer and water the tree thoroughly.

After you have finished pruning, you should fertilize the tree. The first application should be in spring. This is a great time to fertilize the tree because it will stimulate new growth and produce a stronger tree. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer label for the proper application.

Fruit Tree Pruning Safety Tips

  1. Keep all tools sharp and clean. They will dull quickly if they are not sharpened or cleaned.
  2. Never use your pruning shears to remove any limbs from the tree. They should only be used to cut the limbs.
  3. Always wear gloves when pruning. It is a good idea to wear two pairs of gloves. One pair to keep the fingers and hands clean, and one pair for pruning. The thin layer of skin on the fingers and hands are very sensitive to pruning.
